Dawn Beach is a fine beach of sugar-white, powdery sand on the east side of St. Maarten. The name says it all: early risers may enjoy spectacular views of the Caribbean sunrise with the island of St. Barth in the distance. Snorkeling at Dawn Beach is absolutely incredible. A large coral reef is just off shore so just wade into the water and get a view of the sea life below. The surf can sometimes be a little challenging, so for very young children or toddlers Dawn Beach won´t be the ideal beach. But if you are a surfer or body boarder, Dawn Beach is for you!
Although it can be a little rough to get to Dawn Beach (the road that leads up and over the hills to the coast is quite bumpy and windy), it is well worth the trip! The fact that Dawn Beach is a bit "off-the-beaten-path" adds to its charm and almost always guarantees it will be less crowded than it's larger, French side counterpart, Orient Beach. There are several beach bars spotted along the sand, most are located to the north end of the beach. They all have beach chairs and umbrellas for rent and serve lunch and drinks all day. Or, if you want to be a little more secluded and don't mind bringing your own refreshments, the southern end of the beach is for you. Either way, a day at Dawn Beach is a day well spent.
